Strategy & Design

Convergia

Abstract carried out a consulting engagement to analyse Convergia's mediation platform and design a proposal to modernise it. The work assessed the existing operation and delivered a reference architecture for processing large network data streams. The project ended with the presentation of the proposal; it did not include implementation.

Convergia before Abstract

Needs

Assess how to modernise the mediation platform and have a proposal that could be compared with other alternatives.

Pain points

The platform ran on legacy Oracle technology, with high licensing costs and capacity that depended mainly on adding resources to each machine.

Limitations

Documentation was scarce and the processes were spread across different stages and dependencies. The proposal also had to include a relational database.

Project objective

Align expectations, prioritize value, and give execution a clear structure.

Understand and document the existing operation.

Define an architecture to process network data streams at scale.

Abstract's contribution

Through discovery, design, and architecture, Abstract laid the foundations for a robust, scalable solution aligned with business goals.

Platform discovery and analysis

We gathered and organised the available information about the system.

  • Review of existing documentation and scattered information about the platform.
  • A map of the data processing stages and their dependencies.
  • Analysis of how network data becomes information for business processes such as billing and usage analysis.

Designing a modern architecture

We proposed an architecture to process network data streams at scale.

  • Apache Kafka and Apache Flink for stream processing.
  • Kubernetes and PostgreSQL at the core of the design.
  • TimescaleDB and Redis as part of the proposed stack.

Weighing modernisation options

We delivered a proposal Convergia could compare with the other options it was evaluating.

  • AWS and Azure as deployment options.
  • The design presented to the client, who decided how to proceed.
